Prairie Mapping
VerticalGeo is dedicated to “Green Projects.” One of our favorite subjects is mapping the Native TallGrass Prairie, and restoration projects to reclaim the TallGrass Prairie. Illinois’ nickname is the “Prairie State,” and we have many wonderful examples of native and restored TallGrass Prairies within our state.
VerticalGeo has taken on a project to map all the Native TallGrass Prairies and restoration projects in the State of Illinois.
One of the prairies we have worked on is the Rock Springs Park Prairie in the City of O’Fallon, Illinois. We helped with the restoration of the prairie and we have also mapped the prairie. Here is a sample of our prairie mapping of Rock Springs Park:
Another Prairie we have mapped is the Ayers Sand Prairie Nature Preserve in Carroll County, Illinois. Here is our map of Ayers Sand Prairie:
Many of our Prairie Maps are interactive and located on Google Maps. Here is a link to one of our Google Maps. Link.
There are several good resources if you are studying the TallGrass. They include:
- Ken Robertson’s TallGrass Prairie in Illinois Webpage
- Illinois Natural History Survey Prairie WebPage
